Preview what content editors and marketers can see and do in the Webflow canvas.
As a Designer, you have access to the full set of features when editing your site in Webflow. But sometimes it helps to step into a different role temporarily — to see what a teammate sees, help them troubleshoot, or just work in a more focused editing mode. You can preview your site as a Content editor or Marketer directly in the Webflow canvas, with the option to save a role as your default so it loads automatically every time you return. You can always switch back to the Designer role at any time.
Preview the content editor or marketer role
Previewing a role switches your canvas view to match what users in that role can see and do. This is useful for checking what a content editor or marketer can access, helping teammates troubleshoot, or working in a less complex editing mode.
To preview a site role:
- Open your site in Webflow
- Click the Webflow logo in the top-left corner
- Hover over Preview role
- Choose Marketer or Content editor
The canvas refreshes to reflect that role's permissions. You're still logged in as yourself — only your view has changed.
Set a default preview role for a site
If you regularly work on a specific site as a Marketer or Content editor, you can save that role as your default. The canvas will load in that role automatically every time you return, so you don't have to switch manually each session. This setting is saved at the site level, so it won't impact other sites you work on.
To set a default preview role:
- Preview the Marketer or Content editor role
- Click the Webflow logo again
- Hover over Preview role
- Choose Always default to [role] on this site
Note
You can repeat the steps and uncheck Always default to [role] on this site to have the canvas return to your assigned Designer role on your next visit.
Switch back to your assigned role
To exit the previewed role and return to your Designer view for the current session:
- Click the Webflow logo in the top-left corner
- Hover over Preview role
- Click Back to assigned role
Note
If you have a default preview role saved, clicking Back to assigned role only affects the current session. The canvas will still open in your saved default role the next time you return. To permanently clear the default, uncheck the Always default to [role] on this site option.
