Why is my domain stuck in an “Update pending” or “Update needed” status?

Updated

Note

When using the Cloudflare proxy or another reverse proxy setup, your domain may still show “Update needed” in Site settings > Publishing > Production. This is expected, as the proxy hides your DNS records from Webflow’s verification check. If your site is published and loading correctly, no action is needed and you won't be blocked from publishing to your custom domain.

If your domain is stuck in an “Update pending” or “Update needed” status, you likely have incorrect, old, or extra DNS records configured.

Check your DNS records and make sure you only have:

  • One A record with the hostname @ and the value 198.202.211.1
  • One CNAME record with the hostname www and the value cdn.webflow.com

If you have extra or outdated A or CNAME records with the same hostnames, your domain may not connect correctly. Remove any duplicates or incorrect entries, then return to your Webflow site’s Publishing tab and click Check status again.

For the most accurate setup, follow the steps in How do I manually migrate my DNS records to confirm your configuration matches Webflow’s requirements.
