Bandwidth

An overview of bandwidth on Webflow.

We’re transitioning to a new UI, and are in the process of updating our Webflow University content.

In this lesson:

  1. What is bandwidth?
  2. How can I reduce my bandwidth usage?
  3. What happens if I go over my bandwidth limits?

What is bandwidth?

Bandwidth is a measurement of the total size of all files served to your site visitors.

For example, when a visitor loads a page, Webflow sends that page file and all the assets (such as fonts, assets, and videos) to the customer’s browser. If you’re serving a very simple page to one visitor, your bandwidth usage will be almost undetectably small. But if you’re serving an asset-heavy page to a really large number of visitors, your bandwidth usage will quickly rise.

Note: Bandwidth is limited per-site based on your site plan — for details, see our plans and pricing or view the hosting tab in your project settings.

How can I reduce my bandwidth usage?

To bring your site’s bandwidth usage down, you can try optimizing file sizes or reducing usage of large files like videos. Here’s some helpful tips to consider:

Note: Webflow’s built-in responsive images support automatically resizes inline images based on the device size of your visitor. Responsive image support does not cover background images, or images in CMS-driven rich text elements.

What happens if I go over my bandwidth limits?

Webflow will reach out to discuss upgrades if you repeatedly exceed your limits — we won’t automatically throttle your website performance or hamper your site performance in any way without reaching out first.

If optimizing assets isn’t enough to bring your usage down and you anticipate needing higher bandwidth limits, please reach out to our Webflow Enterprise team to discuss transitioning your site to our enterprise hosting plan, which offers custom bandwidth and traffic support.
