Centralize your design feedback and streamline your team’s communication with comments — available for Workspace members and guests.
Comments allow you to streamline your team’s communication so you can build and iterate on your designs faster. All Workspace roles, including guests and reviewers, can use comments. Comments aren't supported in the legacy Editor.
You can view and interact with comments on the canvas across Design, Build, Edit, Preview, and Comment modes. You can also surface Webflow comment activity with other collaboration and project management tools using the Comments API.
How to add, share, edit, delete, and resolve comments
To add a comment:
- Click the “View comments” icon in the top toolbar or press C on your keyboard to enter Comment mode
- Click the element on the canvas where you want to add a comment
- Type your message in the input field
- Click Post or press Command + Return on Mac (or Control + Return on Windows) to post your comment
You can switch between breakpoints to leave comments on a specific breakpoint. Comments don’t currently support accented characters (e.g., é, ñ, ü).
Note
Comments left on static elements on Collection pages (i.e., elements
that aren’t connected to the CMS) appear on the page for every item
in the Collection. You can leave comments on individual Collection
items by commenting on dynamic elements (also called “CMS-bound elements,”
i.e., elements connected to the CMS that change dynamically for each
Collection item in a given Collection).
To share a link to a comment thread:
- Click the comment in the Comments panel or the “speech bubble” icon on the canvas
- Click the “copy link” icon to copy the URL to your clipboard
You can share the URL with other Workspace members or guests — anyone with access to the site who clicks the link will be taken directly to the comment thread in Webflow.
To edit or delete your comment, hover over your comment, click the“more options” icon and choose Edit or Delete. You can resolve comment threads by clicking the “checkmark” icon on the comment thread.
You can also unresolve and reopen comment threads from the Comments panel when the Show resolved filter is enabled. Click the comment in the Comments panel to open the thread on the canvas, then click the “circled checkmark” icon on the comment thread.
Note
If you move an element with comments to another part of the canvas,
the comments will move with it.
Comment metadata
When you create a comment, it will include the following metadata on the parent comment:
To view this data, hover over the breakpoint icon in the Comment panel.
Note
Comment metadata may not appear if comments were created before the comment metadata feature was released or if an error occurs.
How to mention Workspace members or guests in comments
You can @mention members or guests of your Workspace to include them in comment threads and bring their attention to a specific part of your site design. They’ll receive an email notification which includes the name of the site and the page where your comment was placed, as well as a link to open your comment in the Designer.
To @mention a member of your Workspace, add a new comment, type @ in the input field, and choose their name from the dropdown that appears. You can type their name after the @ to narrow down the results and use the Up and Down arrows and Return key to navigate the results and select their name.
How to view and filter comments
You can view and interact with comments on the canvas across Design, Build, Edit, Preview, and Comment modes, and in the Comments panel. You can hide comments on the canvas at any time by pressing Shift + C on your keyboard, or by right-clicking a comment bubble and choosing Hide comments on canvas.
If you’ve hidden comments and want to show them again, press Shift + C on your keyboard, or switch to Comment mode, right-click a comment bubble, and choose Show comments on canvas.
You can click on comments in the Comments panel to expand and view their threads. You can also expand and view threads on the canvas by clicking the “speech bubble” icon. Unread comments are highlighted with a blue dot next to the comment timestamp.
Note
Comments are not shown in real time (i.e., don’t update automatically).
You’ll need to refresh your site to view new comments.
You can filter comments in the Comments panel to view comments only on the current site page (including individual Collection item pages) and/or to include resolved comments.
To filter comments, click the “more options” dots and choose Only on this page and/or Show resolved. Resolved comments are marked with a checkmark in the Comments panel.
You can unresolve and reopen comment threads when the Show resolved filter is enabled. Click the comment in the Comments panel to open the thread on the canvas, then click the “circled checkmark” icon on the comment thread.
How to set comment email notifications
You can choose which comments you receive email notifications for (e.g., all comments or replies only) or disable email notifications for comments altogether. To manage your comment email notifications, go to the Comments panel and click the “more options” dots. From there, you can choose All comments, Replies & mentions only, or None.
Note
You won’t receive notifications for any comments you post unless
you @mention yourself, regardless of your email notification settings.
Share links
You can also provide share links so stakeholders can submit site draft feedback without needing to create an account. Workspace members have access to share links while anyone (including those not in the Workspace) have access to comment-only links.
FAQ
Deleting a site page removes all comments on that page. When an element is deleted, comments made on that element are moved and attached to the parent element of the deleted element.
When a comment author is removed from the site’s Workspace, the comment remains on the site and the author’s name is listed as “Deactivated user.”
What happens to comments when a page branch is merged?
When a page branch is merged into the main site, all comments added to the page branch (resolved and unresolved) are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
You can’t leave comments on elements only visible via animation or custom code embeds (but you can comment on rendered on-canvas content. Additionally, you can’t comment on individual elements within a component, or on Collection items in the CMS panel.
No. You can resolve someone else’s comment, but you can’t edit or delete it.
Is there a limit on the number of comments a site can have?
Yes. A site can have up to 20,000 comment threads, with up to 20 replies per thread. Deleted comments don’t count toward the limit, but resolved comments do.
What should I do if I reach the comment limit?
If you reach the comment limit for your site, you’ll need to delete older comment threads to continue adding new comments. Resolved comments still count toward the limit; deleted comments don’t.
How do I delete a resolved comment?
Resolved comments are hidden on the canvas and in the Comments panel by default. Only Workspace owners, Workspace admins, and the comment author can delete a comment. To delete a resolved comment:
Click the “View comments” icon in the top toolbar or press C on your keyboard to enter Comment mode
Click the “more options” dots in the Comments panel
Enable Show resolved under Filter comments (if not already enabled)
Click the resolved comment you want to delete in the Comments panel or on the canvas
Hover over the comment on the canvas and click the “more options” dots
Click Delete
What’s the difference between authenticated and unauthenticated reviewers?
Authenticated reviewers are reviewers that already have Webflow accounts and comment using that account. Unauthenticated reviewers do not have Webflow accounts but will need to verify their email address to leave a comment.
You can control access by selecting the visibility settings (e.g., “Only Workspace members with access” or “Anyone with the link can comment”).
Can unauthenticated reviewers make site changes?
No. Unauthenticated users can only view the site in preview mode and leave comments. They cannot make any edits to the site content or structure.
How is reviewer identity tracked if they don’t log in?
Identity is tracked when a reviewer enters their name and email before submitting a comment. This information is stored and linked to their comment. If they visit again using the same browser, Webflow will remember them using local storage and cookies (unless cleared).
Users must enter a name and a valid email address before submitting a comment. There are also comment rate limits in place to mitigate abuse.
Can I limit which Workspace members can send site share links?
Enterprise admins can limit which Workspace members can send site share links by going to Workspace settings > General > Sharing permissions and toggling Site share link access “on” or “off”.
Can I limit share links by email domain?
Currently, comment-only link settings don't support email domain restrictions (e.g., comments cannot be restricted to @company.com email addresses).
Why doesn’t the keyboard shortcut Shift + N open the Comments panel?
The keyboard shortcut to enter Comment mode and open the Comments panel is now C. You can also show or hide comments on the canvas by pressing Shift + C on your keyboard.
