Can an element be in multiple optimizations?

Updated

Understand when an element can or can’t be reused across optimizations.

Webflow helps you avoid conflicts and keep your optimizations focused by limiting how elements can be reused. When an optimization changes an element's content or structure, it wraps the element in an optimization wrapper. Optimize uses these wrappers to manage element versions and prevent overlap with other optimizations, so each element can only have one optimization wrapper. Style-only changes (e.g., color, font, or spacing) don't trigger an optimization wrapper.

This means an element can be included in multiple optimizations, as long as only one of those optimizations applies a wrapper.

Pro tip

You can also create as many variations as you want in an optimization to test different versions of an element.

Optimization wrapper management

If you're trying to edit an element and can't because it's wrapped by another optimization, you can check which optimization is using the element, then decide whether to keep it as-is or free it up for a new one.

Check which optimization is wrapping the element

While editing an optimization, click the element and try to edit it. A settings window appears showing which optimization is applying a wrapper to the element and its current status. If the optimization is live, click View optimization to review it.

Move the element to a different optimization

If you want to use the element in a new optimization, you’ll need to archive or delete the one that’s currently wrapping it. The settings window gives you options based on the optimization’s current status.
