Reset your DNS settings and connect your previously hosted domain to Webflow.
Webflow isn’t a domain registrar (i.e., Webflow doesn’t sell domains), so you can’t transfer a custom domain to Webflow. However, you can purchase a domain from IONOS through Webflow, or connect any domain you own to your Webflow site by setting DNS records with your current domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.).
If you’d like to connect a custom domain that was previously hosted on another platform (e.g., Squarespace, etc.), please use the following steps to reset your DNS settings before connecting your domain to Webflow:
- Set the nameservers of your domain to use the default nameservers of your domain registrar or DNS host, if you’ve set them to custom nameservers. For additional support, contact your domain registrar’s support or view their documentation on nameservers.
- Remove all A records set on the root domain (i.e., hostname @ or yourdomain.com)
- Remove all CNAME records on the full domain (i.e., hostname www, www., or www.yourdomain.com)
- Remove all CNAME records on any subdomain you also want to connect, if applicable (e.g., subdomain.yourdomain.com)
The above steps help minimize and even eliminate any issue or conflicts that might require you to troubleshoot your DNS settings later.
ImportantSome domain registrars don’t provide DNS hosting services — that is, they don’t allow you to create DNS records, but will allow you to set custom nameservers. If your domain registrar doesn’t provide DNS hosting, you can transfer your domain or point your domain’s nameservers (i.e., NS records) to another registrar that provides DNS hosting and manage your DNS records there.
Because every domain registrar and DNS host differs, we recommend that you reference your domain registrar’s documentation for assistance with their interface and settings. Check out a list of domain registrars and links to their documentation.
