Set your site’s language code

Updated

Choose the primary language for your site, or add a country to make it region-specific.

Setting your site’s language code lets you declare the natural (human) language of your site. This helps browsers, translation applications, and assistive technologies like screen readers accurately perform language tasks such as:

  • Selecting correct accents and pronunciation in text-to-speech applications

  • Grammar and spell-checking

  • Translating web pages

  • Applying appropriate fonts

You can also optionally add a country to create a locale code — a combination of a language code and a country code (e.g., en-US for English – United States or fr-CA for French – Canada). Using the most accurate code ensures better support for regional spelling, grammar, and pronunciation.

How to set your site’s language or locale code

Webflow Localization automatically assigns your site’s language or locale code based on the language (and optionally country) you set for your primary locale in Localization settings. To set your site’s primary locale:

  1. Open your site in Webflow

  2. Open Settings panel > Localization in the left toolbar, or click the “globe” icon in the top bar and click Localization settings

  3. Choose or type a Language

  4. (Optional) Choose or type a Country

  5. Review and update the other fields as needed (Display name, Create a subdirectory, Display image)

  6. Click Save

  7. Click Save changes at the top of Localization settings

You can change your primary locale at any time.

Note

The locale-specific language codes set in Localization settings override the legacy language code field in Site settings > General > Localization.
