Webflow Apps overview

Updated

Increase your site’s functionality and extend Webflow’s core capabilities with Apps.

Apps are third-party applications that you can install on your site or Workspace from the Webflow Marketplace. Apps can extend the functionality of key Webflow features, including forms, CMS Collections, User Accounts, and Ecommerce, and expand the capabilities of the Webflow Designer.

How to add an App to your site or Workspace

To add an app to your site or Workspace:

  1. Go to the individual App page on the Webflow Marketplace
  2. Click Add to site
  3. Select the Workspaces and/or sites you want to add the App to
  4. Click Authorize app
  5. Click Go to “App name” on the pop-up banner
  6. Follow the App’s instructions to add it to your site

You can also add an app directly from the Apps panel. Search for and select the App you want to add, then click Install on site.

Note

When you authorize an App for a Workspace, the App is authorized to access all current and future sites within that Workspace.

Important

If you authorize an App for an entire Workspace, the only way to remove the App’s authorization for a single site in that Workspace is to remove authorization for the entire Workspace. This also removes the App’s authorization for all other sites in that Workspace.

How to manage App access

You can view App authorizations and manage App access at the Workspace or site level.

Managing Apps in your Workspace

To view the Workspaces that an App has access to:

  1. Click the Account dropdown in the navbar
  2. Choose a Workspace
  3. Go to Workspace settings > Integrations tab > Connected apps
  4. Click View next to the App’s name

The App has access to all Workspaces and sites listed under “Has access to the following.”

To revoke an App’s access to a Workspace from your Workspace settings:

  1. Click the Account dropdown in the navbar
  2. Choose the Workspace the App has access to
  3. Go to Workspace settings > Apps & integrations tab
  4. Click Uninstall app
  5. Confirm and click Uninstall app in the modal

You can also revoke an App’s access to a Workspace from the Designer:

  1. Open the Apps panel
  2. Click the App for which you want to revoke access
  3. Click Remove app

From there, you’ll be directed to your Workspace settings, where you can click Uninstall app to remove the App’s authorization.

Important

Removing the App’s authorization from a Workspace will remove the App’s authorization for every site in that Workspace. After you revoke an App’s access, any elements added by that App remain on your sites, and any custom code added by that App is removed when you next publish your sites

Managing Apps on your site

To view the Apps authorized on a single site, go to Site settings > Integrations tab > Authorized apps. All Apps listed in this section are authorized to access this site.

To revoke an App’s access to a site from your Site settings:

  1. Go to Site settings > Apps & integrations tab
  2. Click Revoke on the App you want to remove

You can also revoke an App’s access to a site from within the Designer:

  1. Open the Apps panel
  2. Click the App for which you want to revoke access
  3. Click Remove app

From there, you’ll be redirected to your Site settings > Apps & integrations tab where you can click Revoke on the App you want to remove.

Note

If the App is authorized to access your Workspace, you’ll be redirected to your Workspace settings > Apps & integrations tab.

Important

After you revoke an App’s access, any elements added by that App remain on your site, and any custom code added by that App is removed when you next publish your site

Important

If you’ve authorized an App on multiple sites without authorizing the entire Workspace, removing the App from one site will remove it from all others where the App is installed.

How to use Apps in the Designer

Some Apps can directly access the Webflow Designer through a built-in App window, allowing the App to directly interact with a site’s canvas. These Apps can manage elements, properties, styles, and text on the canvas using custom elements.

How to launch Apps in the Designer

Once you’ve installed an App on your site, you can use the App in the Designer:

  1. Open the Apps panel
  2. Hover over the App you want to open
  3. Click Launch

The App will open in an App window on the Designer canvas.

Note

You can’t access Apps in the Designer within secondary locales. However, custom elements created by Apps in the Designer on the primary locale are inherited by all secondary locales. Learn more about Localization.

How to manage custom elements in the Designer

A custom element is an element that provides a range of methods to manipulate the element’s properties, styles, and child elements. Custom elements can be useful for adding elements to the canvas that are supported in HTML, but aren’t available as native Webflow elements.

Custom elements and their child elements appear in the Navigator with a “slashed box” icon.

You can style custom elements or their child elements just as you would style any other element in Webflow using the Style panel. You can also manage text, attributes, etc. for custom elements and/or their child elements in the Element settings panel or in the on-canvas element settings modal window.

Note

Custom elements created by Apps in the Designer on the primary locale are inherited by all secondary locales. You can’t replace or localize custom elements within secondary locales.

How to use App connections

App connections let you manage elements using an App you’ve installed on your site. Currently, App connections work with styling or changing settings for image and form elements.

To open an app that manages an image or form element:

  1. Click on the App
  2. Go to Style panel > Style with (to adjust styling) or Elements settings panel > Manage with (to adjust settings)
  3. Choose the App with which you want to style or adjust settings of the element

The App will relaunch in the Designer and you can style or change settings for the element directly in the App window.

FAQ and troubleshooting

How much do Apps cost?

The pricing of Apps are set by the App developer and vary from App to App.

Why do some Apps work in the Designer while others don’t?

Some Apps are intended to run in the background (e.g., data sync) while others augment the Designer experience. For Apps that run in the background, click Open app to sign in and configure your App on the developers’ site. For Apps that run in the Designer, click Launch app to open the App window.

Are Apps secure?

All Apps and App versions are reviewed for security before they’re added to the Webflow Marketplace.

Can I set or change permissions for an App?

When you authorize an App, you’ll encounter a list of App permissions. You can’t change permissions for an App (these are defined by the App developer), but you can scope the App’s access to a single site or Workspace when you install an App.

Help! My App isn’t working as expected!

If you’re experiencing errors or other issues with an App, check out the App’s detail page to locate the developers’ support page.
