How do I transfer a site or plan to another workspace?

Updated

Learn how to transfer your site to another user or Workspace.

With a Freelancer or Agency Workspace plan, you can transfer sites between Workspaces in your Dashboard or to other users who own Workspaces where you aren’t a member. This transfers the site’s paid Site plan, custom domain, and more, with no downtime or loss of unused Site plan time.

Requirements to transfer a site with an active Site plan

Transferring a site with an active Site plan to another Workspace is intended for Freelancers and Agencies handing off a site to a client’s Workspace. Only the following Workspace plans can transfer sites with active Site plans:

  • Freelancer
  • Agency

Additional requirements:

  • The destination Workspace must not be an Enterprise Workspace

Need to know

If your Workspace plan is Starter, Core, Growth, or Enterprise — or if the target Workspace is Enterprise — you must downgrade the site to the Starter site plan before transferring it to another Workspace.

Transfer a site with no Site plan to another Workspace

To transfer a site to another Workspace, the recipient must first have a Webflow account and Workspace. Then:

  1. Go to Site settings
  2. Click the Transfer icon
  3. Choose the destination to where you want to transfer
  4. Enter the recipient’s email address
  5. Click the Transfer button

The transferred site will appear locked in your Dashboard. The recipient will receive an email and have a banner notification in their Dashboard informing them they need to accept the transfer.

Once the recipient accepts the transfer request, the site is automatically removed from your Workspace and added to theirs, along with the Site plan and any connected custom domains.

Note

If you want to transfer a site but keep the original, you can duplicate the site and transfer the duplicate. Learn more about what happens when a site is duplicated.

Transfer a site with a paid Site plan to a client

Important

Only Workspaces with a Freelancer or Agency plan can transfer a site with a paid Site plan to a client’s Workspace. The client’s Workspace must not be an Enterprise Workspace. Learn more.

You can transfer any site with an active plan from your Freelancer or Agency Workspace directly to your client’s Workspace:

  1. Go to Site settings
  2. Click the Transfer icon
  3. Enter your client’s email address
  4. Click the Transfer button

Once your client accepts the transfer request, the site is automatically removed from your Workspace and added to theirs, along with the Site plan and any connected custom domains. If you need to continue working on a site after you transfer it, clients can add you as a Workspace guest as long as you have an Agency or Freelancer Workspace plan. Learn more about the Agency or Freelancer guest role.

If you're on an Agency or Freelancer Workspace plan, you’ll get credit back for unused time on paid subscriptions if the site has an active plan at the time of transfer.

Once the site is transferred, your client will:

  • Receive an email invitation to accept the transfer
  • Log in with their existing account or create a new Webflow account
  • Add their card
  • Re-authenticate access for 3rd party apps connected to the site

Transfer a site to a client’s card using client payments

When you’re a Workspace owner or admin, you can set up client payments when choosing a Site plan or by choosing the Charge to client option for sites already on a Site plan in your Freelancer or Agency Workspace. Then, the site stays in your Workspace but the client is responsible for Site plan and add-on charges. Note that clients must not be an existing member of your Workspace when inviting them to your site.

Special cases

Transferring a site on Made in Webflow

If your site is showcased on Made in Webflow, remove it from Made in Webflow to unlock the site transfer feature.

Additionally, you’ll need to remove all site contributors from Creator Credits before transferring a site. Once the site is transferred, you can re-add the contributors to the site’s Creator Credits so they can continue showcasing the site on Made in Webflow.

Transferring an Ecommerce site

You can transfer an Ecommerce store just like any other site, but there are some key details to keep in mind:

  • Order history is transferred with the store, including fulfilled, unfulfilled, refunded, and disputed orders
  • Payment providers (e.g., Stripe, PayPal) stay connected when you transfer a store, so you may want to manually disconnect payment providers before initiating a transfer
  • Site plans can’t be transferred with a site, so the new store owner will need to add a new Ecommerce site plan and re-enable checkout to process payments
  • New store owners will be able to fulfill previous orders, but if they update any payment accounts, they won’t be able to refund prior orders
  • If you also have User Accounts enabled, all active subscriptions must be cancelled prior to transfer

Transferring a site to or from an Enterprise Workspace or from a Core or Growth Workspace

To transfer a site with an active paid Site plan to or from an Enterprise Workspace or from a Core or Growth Workspace, you’ll first need to downgrade it to the free Starter Site plan. This will result in site downtime if it’s been published, so it’s important to plan the transfer in advance.

To downgrade a site to Starter and transfer it:

  1. Go to Site settings > Plans
  2. Remove any add-ons
  3. Choose Downgrade to Starter
  4. Choose Continue to downgrade
  5. (Optional) Choose the reason you’re downgrading
  6. Click Downgrade to Starter
  7. Click the Transfer icon
  8. Enter the site recipient’s email address
  9. Click the Transfer button

An email invitation is sent to the site recipient to accept the transfer. Once the recipient accepts the transfer, the site is automatically removed from your Workspace and added to theirs.

If the site is transferred to a non-Enterprise Workspace, the new site owner will need to upgrade the site to a paid Site plan, connect their custom domain(s), and publish the site to make it live again.

If the site is transferred to an Enterprise Workspace, the new site owner will need to work with their Webflow Enterprise account team/CSM to provision their Enterprise plan, before connecting their custom domain(s), and publishing the site to make it live again.

What happens when you transfer a site

When you transfer a Webflow site, all of your work in the Designer gets transferred to the new Workspace, including the following content and settings:

  • Styles — including classes and global styles
  • Pages — static and CMS-driven
  • Assets — images, videos, and documents
  • Backup versions — site history
  • Collections and Collection items — CMS content
  • Ecommerce products, categories, order history, and payment providers
  • User accounts
  • Custom code
  • Custom fonts
  • Form submissions
  • 301 redirects
  • Other site settings

For security and privacy reasons, account- and client-specific configurations are reset to default and therefore not transferred with your site. These include:

  • Teammates working in the Editor
  • Form notification settings
  • reCAPTCHA keys (the keys are reset on transfer, but reCAPTCHA remains enabled)
  • Adobe Fonts (if the Adobe Fonts API key is integrated into the site)
  • Billing and any other account- or email-specific information
  • Comments

Libraries are uninstalled from a site upon transfer. Any components, variables, and assets in use on the site from the shared Library will be copied to the site.

Recipients will also have to reauthorize app access once they accept the site transfer.

Important

To transfer a site with localized content and settings, first duplicate the site and then transfer the duplicate.

How to cancel a site transfer

If you initiated a site transfer in error, you can cancel the transfer. Click the more options dots under your site’s thumbnail and choose Cancel site transfer.
