Client payments

Updated

Streamline client billing and site transfers from your Freelancer or Agency Workspace.

Before you get started

The client payments feature is only available on Freelancer and Agency Workspace plans.

Client payments lets Workspace owners and admins hand off site billing to your clients — so they pay for their own site plans, bandwidth, and add-ons directly in Webflow. You stay in control of the site without having to manage their costs. You can also transfer any site on a paid plan directly to a client's Workspace and credit card — with no downtime or plan downgrade required.

How to set up client payments

Important

To accept the client payment invite, your client needs to use a new or existing Webflow account associated with the email address you used to invite them. Also, the client's Webflow account must not be a member of your Workspace.

To set up client payments:

  1. Go to Site settings > Plans
  2. Choose the Website tab or the Ecommerce site tab
  3. Begin the client payment flow:
    • New Site plan — click Upgrade to [Site plan] > Charge to client
    • Existing Site plan — click You are on [Site plan] > Charge to client
  4. Type in the client's details, then click Next
  5. Choose a Yearly or Monthly billing frequency — the client can change this later
  6. Click Send payment request

Once the client accepts, they'll be billed for all Site plans and add-ons (e.g., bandwidth, Localization, Webflow Optimize, Webflow Analyze). At that point, you can also control the client's permission level on the site — clients are assigned the content editor role by default. You can update their permissions in Site settings > Site access.

Good to know

You can also start a client payment request from Client management > Clients > Send a payment request.

Client payment limitations

  • Only one client can be attached to a site at a time
  • You can have a maximum of ten pending client payment requests in your Workspace
  • You can't transfer a Site plan from a site using client payments to another site in your Workspace

Note

If client payments is enabled mid-billing cycle as part of a site handoff, your Workspace receives a prorated credit for the remaining time on the subscription. That credit is applied to future purchases in that Workspace.

How to view the status of a "payment request"

To check the status of a payment request you've sent a client:

  1. Go to Site settings > Billing
  2. In the Client payment invoices section, check the Status column

Client payment request statuses:

  • Requested — your client hasn't completed payment yet. You can click the Options icon and click Send payment reminder.
  • Paid — your client has completed the payment request

If your client rejects the request, you'll be notified by email and the Client payment invoices section is no longer shown.

How to transfer a site on client payments to a client

You can transfer any site with an active plan from your Freelancer or Agency Workspace directly to your client's Workspace:

  1. Go to Site settings > Billing
  2. Click Transfer site
  3. Click Send transfer request

Once transferred, you won't be able to make changes to the site unless the client adds you to their Workspace.

Note

Libraries are uninstalled when a site is transferred. Any library components, assets, or variables in use on the site are converted to site-level components, assets, and variables.

What happens to billing during a site transfer?

  • If you're paying for the site  if the transfer happens mid-billing cycle, you'll automatically receive a prorated credit for the unused time on the subscription. That credit is applied to future purchases in your Workspace.
  • If your client is paying for the site  No credit is issued. Since the client has been financially responsible for the site, their billing continues uninterrupted after the transfer.

What happens if the site has exceeded Analyze/Optimize usage or bandwidth?

  • If the site has exceeded usage or bandwidth for one month, Webflow allows the transfer and resets bandwidth usage to 0
  • If the site has exceeded usage or bandwidth for two consecutive months, the transfer can be initiated, but the client must pay for a new plan (and any add-ons) that matches the site's bandwidth usage before the transfer completes
